Set beside the Lake inspired by Capability Brown’s original plan, Kirkharle promises Creativity and Culture in the beautiful Northumbrian Countryside. Enjoy a great day out to explore the inspirational landscape and courtyard at the birthplace of the most famous of British heritage landscape gardeners.
Home to many crafts and a diverse range of arts, Kirkharle Courtyard in Northumberland is a truly unique shopping experience in the relaxed atmosphere of an historic farm courtyard, just thirty minutes from Newcastle upon Tyne.
Here you can have the rare opportunity of speaking to the artists and designers, and seeing the products being made and sold in a beautiful rural setting.
The Lake at Kirkharle is the inspirational vision of Capability Brown and may be one of his first ever landscape designs. Brown’s plan shows hundreds of trees - in clumps, small groups and single trees - with the great sweep of a serpentine lake as the centre piece. Thanks to a local historic landscape specialist, who interpreted and adapted Brown’s design to fit the present day landscape, and the vision of the present landowners, Brown’s plan has been brought to life and you can now enjoy his birthplace for yourself by taking the pleasant walk around the lake on the fully accessible footpath.
